A Project for Better Journalism chapter

ASTROWORLD is the third studio album by Travis Scott. It was released on August 3, 2018. It was produced by Travis Scott and legendary producer Mike Dean, who has produced various Kanye West and Jay Z albums. Fans have been waiting for arrival since May 2016. The album is named after a closed down amusement park from Scott hometown Houston. The album is a continuation of the theme of amusement from his previous album Rodeo (2015)

“My whole idea was, if you locked into Rodeo, you definitely locked into ASTROWORLD. I’m just finishing the saga I started on my first album. This is supposed to be my second album. I had to go quick, because like I said, I had all these ideas, I just had to get off really quick, but now I’m finally back home with ASTROWORLD.” -Travis Scott

The album starts with an opening track STARGAZING, that meets expectations but doesn’t exceed expectation. The next track CAROUSEL does a good job of introducing the theme of amusement and fun that continues throughout the album. I think the Frank Ocean vocals take a few listens to warm up to, but I appreciate what it adds to the song and the project. The transition from CAROUSEL to SICKO MODE is a great example of how production quality can enhance an album.

There are some songs that stand out. Like the smash single SICKO MODE featuring Drake and Swae Lee that can get everyone and their mother hype. The song starts out with instrumentals leading to Drake’s intro vocals, later to the Travis Scott’s verse that’s acts as a transition to the climax of the song, after the adlibs, we get the legendary Drake verse that can elevate any song. YOSEMITE is another song worth mentioning. It is another example of how the features add substance to the project. The sultry intro by Gunna is a perfect introduction to Scott’s melodic verse but the icing cake is Nav’s verse that is the perfect conclusion to the song, and a perfect transition to another special song on the album.

My favorite song on the album at this moment is CAN’T SAY because it is the perfect example of the theme of the album. It feels like a child entering the world Scott has created. The verse in the middle of the song by newcomer Don Toliver, that makes me what to replay his verse for infinity. From the beat to his cadence is the perfect mixture.

On a scale from 1-10, the album is an 8. It is too soon to consider the album as a classic. It isn’t perfect, there are some songs that seem like filler songs. But there are some songs that are worthy of talking about. The features are worth talking about. The album has features from new artists like Sheck Wes, Nav, and Don Toliver to established artists like Drake, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, and Quavo. The features add substance to the album to an otherwise elementary album. This album is better than any other project that he has released because it is an album that has one concise theme that is depicted in every song.

We asked students at Perry hall high about opinions on ASTROWORLD and how their opinions varied. These are students that had good things to say about the album.

“It is a 10, it could have been better. The amount of features made the album better. The fact that he didn’t name the features on the album made it better. I would recommend it 10 out of 10,” said by senior, Chidera Ofoh.

“Two years was worth it, and that thing bumped,” said junior, JP Udente.

But not everyone was so keen on the album.

“I give it a 4. In my opinion it was overhyped, and the songs were boring. There were two songs that were good. The only reason they were good was because other artists like Drake were featured,” said senior, Mia Sandoval.
